EV Load Management
Add EV charging without upgrading your electrical service. Load management systems monitor your home's demand and automatically adjust charging so your service is never overloaded.
- Your load calculation shows limited spare capacity
- A panel upgrade would be expensive or delayed by utility work
- You are adding a second EV charger
- Multi-unit properties sharing a service
How load management works
A current sensor on your service feeds real-time demand to the charger or a dedicated controller. When the house is using more power — dryer, oven, AC — charging slows down, then speeds back up when demand drops. The NEC recognizes these energy-management systems in load calculations.
Questions
FAQ
Will my car charge slower?
Only during peak household demand. Most overnight charging happens when other loads are low, so many owners see little difference.
Is it a permanent alternative to a panel upgrade?
For many homes, yes. If you later add large loads like a heat pump or ADU, you may still need an upgrade.
