How to tell when your electrical panel is too small, outdated, or unsafe — and what to do next.

Your panel is the heart of your home's electrical system
Every circuit in your home starts at the main panel. When it is undersized or failing, you see it in tripping breakers, flickering lights, and no room to add the things you want — like an EV charger or heat pump.
Warning signs
- Breakers trip often, especially when large appliances run
- The panel or breakers feel warm, buzz, or smell hot
- Your service is 60A or 100A and you are adding major loads
- The panel is a Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or other problem-prone brand
- There is no space for new breakers, or tandem breakers are used everywhere
- You still have a fuse box
- There is rust or water damage inside the panel
Upgrade or replace?
If you need more capacity, you need a service upgrade — commonly to 200A. If capacity is fine but the equipment is unsafe or worn out, a same-size replacement may be enough. A load calculation tells you which.
What to do next
Take a photo of your panel label and the inside of the panel door and send it with an estimate request. We can often tell you the likely path before a site visit.
